Hello! My name is Ryan Chisum. Thank you for visiting my uPlej profile!

The charity I chose to support is the American Association of the Deaf-Blind. I have always had a soft spot in my heart for the blind. Of course, I do have a soft spot for ALL of those who suffer or have suffered from some misfortune of ANY kind, but being an artist and a music lover, I felt that this charity was the best choice for me. Also, I feel that there is so much beauty in the world, so much to see and hear, that I feel sad for those individuals who will never be able to experience the same beauty.

Many years ago, I was assistant manager for a Carl’s Jr. in Modesto, California. While I was there, I was fortunate to have worked with a very special young man named Duane. He was one of my best employees; always on time, always willing to help out in any way, always happy, and he had a GREAT sense of humor. He worked up front on the register and his awesome attitude reflected upon everyone. Oh yeah…Duane was also blind!

Customers were always amazed by Duane’s competency. Carl’s Jr. had special braille covers for the registers and Duane could work ‘em as well as any other employee, if not better. He never entered in the wrong order and was never short of cash when the work day was over. We also never had any incidents of dishonest customers lying to Duane about the denominations of money they were handing him. Which, to me, was a very positive reflection on society and it made me feel good about people in general.

Duane was an inspiration! I am very happy to have known him and it was a pleasure to have worked with him.
